Reading a gait asymmetry

What a left/right stance difference tells you — and how to objectify it simply.

Reading a gait asymmetry

The eye sees, but doesn't quantify

A limp is spotted at a glance. Its measurement, however, escapes observation: how much does stance time differ between left and right? Does that difference worsen with fatigue?

The indicators to read

  • L/R stance time: the first asymmetry to objectify.
  • Step length: a side that "shortens" often signals a compensation.
  • Foot clearance: useful for fall risk.

In practice

One sensor on each foot is enough to quantify these and track them over time. You compare one assessment to the previous, rather than one impression to another.

iKinesis quantifies; the clinical interpretation remains yours.
